How to choose an ice fishing rod

Three choices get you to the right rod. Start with the fish, then the length, then decide if you need a reel.

1. Match the action to the fish

Ultralight for bluegill and other panfish. Light for perch and crappie. Medium for walleye and bigger fish.

2. Pick a length

Shorter rods are easier to handle in a shack or shelter. Longer rods give you more reach and line control on open ice. We make them from 24″ to 44″.

3. Rod only or combo

Have a reel you like? Buy the rod only. Starting fresh? The JP200 combo is ready to fish, and the JP500 is the smoother upgrade.

Common questions

It lets your wrist stay straight while the rod stays level. That means less wrist and forearm fatigue, more power on the hookset, and better control on the retrieve.

If it breaks, we replace it. Contact us with your order details and a photo of the rod.

Medium. It has the backbone for bigger fish. For perch and crappie choose Light, and for bluegill and other panfish choose Ultralight.

Yes. Buy the rod only and mount the reel you already use.
