Choosing an ultralight ice fishing rod

An ultralight rod is the right tool when the fish are small and the bites are light. Bluegill, sunfish, and other panfish often take a bait so gently that a stiffer rod never shows it. An ultralight tip bends at the slightest weight, so you see the bite and set the hook in time.

What length do you need?

In a shack or pop-up shelter, a shorter rod is easier to handle and keeps you close to the hole. On open ice, a longer rod gives you more reach and better line control in the wind. If you fish both ways, a mid-length rod is a good place to start.

Rod only or combo?

If you already have a small spinning reel you like, buy the rod only. If you want to fish the day it arrives, pick a combo. The JP200 is our standard reel with 3 ball bearings. The JP500 has 5+1 ball bearings for a smoother retrieve.

Why the angled handle matters here

Panfishing means hours of small, steady jigging. The angled handle keeps your wrist straight and in line with your forearm, so you feel less fatigue at the end of the day.
